TRIP TO SEE HAIRSPRAY
What a great day we had! The production of 'Hairspray' that Rathdown School put on was amazing. And as an added bonus, our bus driver was a fantastic harmonica player and gave us a taste of the blues before we disembarked. What a treat!
Carol Singing at The Glebe
Just before Christmas, 6th class visited our neighbours in The Glebe Nursing Home and we sang Christmas Carols for them. The residents really appreciated the event and were delighted when the kids took the time to have a little chat afterwards. The staff very kindly gave us refreshments too!
Mrs Brislane has a big collection of picture books in her store room!
We picked our favourite ones and read them to our buddies.
Our first half term in 6th class - September and October 2017
It's been such a busy couple of months since we came back to school at the end of August. We had our 6-week block of swimming lessons in Meadowbrook Pool which was great fun, hard to believe that's it for us for swimming lessons in KCOINS!
The thing everyone was most looking forward to about 6th class was meeting their Junior Infant buddies for the first time. We did this in September and all the buddies were thrilled to meet each other. We have done lots of fun things together, including an art class where finger-painted hot-air balloons. We also went and built scarecrows together, and the 6th class buddies have been escorting Junior Infants to our church assembly each month.
In October, a group of 10 of us went to Christ Church Cathedral with Mrs. Brislane to represent the school at the Diocesan service for Primary Schools.
Some of what we've been learning this term:
SESE - we've been learning about friction and levers in Science. We've learned a lot about famine in both History and Geography; in History we focused on The Great Famine in Ireland in the 1800s and in Geography we looked at current famine in West Africa.
We've been reading the novel 'Under the Hawthorn Tree' by Marita Conlon-McKenna.
Art - Our first art project was to design our portfolios. We'll keep all our art work in them and will take them home in June. We designed Maori tattoos, designed 3D portraits (inspired by Picasso) and we did some chalk pastel drawings (inspired by Munch's 'The Scream') Our latest art project was to decorate the classroom and the corridor outside our room for Hallowe'en.
Reading - we have been reading up a storm in 6th class since we returned to school. We made our own Pokemon Folders in August and Mrs Brislane gives out Pokemon for every 40 pages we read. At the rate we're going, she's going to run out pretty quickly! Needless to say, Mrs. Brislane is thrilled about the enthusiasm for reading - keep an eye on our page and we'll recommend books that we think others might enjoy.
We had a lovely Hallowe'en Dress Up Day and the Hallowe'en Parade was fab.
Looking forward to an equally busy run-up to Christmas!
